POLAR EXPEDITION.
BYRE'S FUTURE PLANS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. I Advice received here to-night states 1 that preparations are under way. for Rear-Admiral Richard Byrd's second ex- , pedition to the Antarctic. It is expected that the expedition will leave the United States in September for New Zealand. Rear-Admiral Byrd announced last year that on his forthcoming expedition to the Antarctic he intends to establish a sub-base in the interior of the continent at the foot of the Queen Maude Mountain Range and spend the polar winter there, macing scientific observations. He said a friend had promised him a ship and he had 35 tons of assorted equipment ready at the Boston navy yard. Admiral Byrd's chief objective will be to determine whether there is a channel between the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea and to explore by air the unknown area east of the South Pole. ' •
