KAEEHI'S PASSENGER LOSES

The only passenger by the Union Company's steamer Karetii, which .u----rived from Suva this morning, lo~t a wager with a friend who travelled fro':i the same port by the American Hncc Mariposa.

The Karctu's passenger, Mr. M. H Miller, wagered his friend that he would bo first in Auckland. The Union Company steamer was first in th» harbour, but the port, health officer and tlis customs officers went first to the Mari-po-a, which therefore got pratique and was alongside the Queen's wharf before the Karetn was able to berth, much to the annoyance of the Karetu's officer.', who had" avowed that their passenger would win.
