NAVAL PROMOTIONS.
TWO BIOBTEDE OFFICERS. Advice has been received in Auckland by wireless from the Admiralty that Commander V. A. C. Crutchley, V.C., D.S.C., of H.M.s. Diomede, has' received promotion to captain, and that Lieut.Comnuuider A. W. Clarke, also of the Diomede, has been promoted to commander. The promotions date from December 31, 1932. Both officers, whose term of duty in New Zealand waters will expire in a few months' time, joined the Diomede in England at the close of her relit in 1930. They reached New Zealand in February, 1931. Captain Crutchley received his decoration for his valorous conduct on •the night of, May 9 and 10, 1918, which was the occasion of the. famous, raid at Ostend. At the time he was A lieutenant and csccond in command of H.M.s. Vindictive, which .had previously taken part in the Zecbniggc engagement. When the Vindictive was making for the entrance of Ostend Harbour the captain was shot down and Lieut. Crutchley took command, and was just able to reach the entrance before the* ship grounded and sank.
