FIREMEN AT THEATRES.
FEES FOR ATTENDANCE. TAKAPUNA DISCUSSION. • •, ) The attendance of firemen at picture theatres was a subject of discussion at last evening's meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council, when the actingengineer, Mr. J. Bodle, reported that members of the brigade had stated definitely. that they were not prepared to attend the theatres under 2/6 per night. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, explained that the trouble was between the picture house proprietors and the brigade. The proprietors claimed that they could not afford 2/6 per night, and that they would rather employ their own men. It was for the council to decide whether 2/6 per night was excessive. "There has been a stand-up fight, not only in . Takapuna, but throughout the Dominion," commented the Mayor. "The proprietors also object to the firemen seeing the programmes for nothing." Mr. J. Hamilton said tliat owing to the times everyone had had to accept a cut. He moved that i-he charge should be fixed at 2/. The Mayor, said it was advisable 'that firemen should be in attendance as a safeguard against panic in the case of an outbreak of ft/e. The motion was lost, and it was decided tliat the picture house proprietors should be informed that the council considers 2/6 per night a fair charge.
