CYCLE CONTROL.
DISCUSSION BY CENTRE. Provincial championships were discussed at) a special meeting of the executive committee of the Amateur Cycle Centre last evening, presided over by Mr. H. C. Webster. The athletic championships will be decided on the Domain on February IS, and the programme will include an Auckland open grass cycle championship decided on points scored in three events — a half-mile, mile and five miles. The provincial cycle championships will be decided on March 4, either at Papatoetoe or Western Springs Stadium. There will be a two-lap sprint championship, kilometre unpaced championship and 10mile human paced A new method of elimination in the sprint event has been evolved and the secretary is drawing up conditions under which the event will be contested. Eliminations both for the sprint and ten-mile events will be decided before the championship day;. There will not be more than ten competitors left in the 10-anile race on the day. The points in the grass championship will be: Finals, first 25, second 15, third 6; semi-finals, 10, 5 and 2; quarter-finals, 5 and 2. For some considerable time there has been dissatisfaction expressed by the Cycle Centre in respect to the organisation of the amateur athletics as far as representation is concerned and in other ways. It was pointed out at last night's meeting that correspondence which had to go beyond the Auckland Centre was considerably delayed owing to the numerous channels it had to pass through. Representation on the Auckland Athletic Centre, as far as cyclists were concerned, was considered inadequate, and a suggested new formula was drawn up for submission to the Cycle Council in Wellington, a copy of which will be forwarded to the Auckland Centre. The proposal, in brief, is for local automony for both athletics and cycling. If was pointed out by various delegates that while cycling was as strong, if not stronger than the athletic side, cycling to some extent had to take a back seat as far as arrangements were concerned, and what was desired was amicable working between all sections, with greater power for cyclists to control their own destiny.
