TAKAPUNA WATER.

AUGIViE-NTING SUPPLY. OPPOSITION TO EXPENSE. The Takapuna Borough Council last evening at a special meeting discusscd the water supply question. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, referring to the falling of the level of Lake Takapuna, whence the supply is derived, said' there was no immediate need for anxiety about a shortage of water. He did not think the present was the time to consider augmenting the supply from some other source; he was strongly opposed to any scheme that would add to the financial burdens of the borough. Mr. Guiniven criticised the attitude of the North Shore Boroughs Water Board towards Takapuna. He did not think the board was fair to Takapuna, and said the. council should consider whether it should not cease to send a representative to the board. He asked that the council support him in trying to prevent the Water Board embarking on any extravagant scheme. The council adopted a motion protesting against any expenditure upon an additional water supply at the present time. The "Star" was informed to-day that no scheme has yet been decided upon by the board. An inspection of the lake was made recently, and the report oil the visit is now under consideration. A meeting of the board will be held tomorrow evening and the whole situation will then be reviewed. "There is no need for any scare over water," said Mr. Guiniven to-day. "There is sufficient water in Lake Pupuke for the requirements of the North Shore for the next ten years." If it were decided to get water from Waitakere the marine boroughs would be faced with an expenditure or £250,000, and they could not stand that at the present time. During a time of depression it would be wrong to launch out. It was quite possible that in ten years a metropolitan water board would be in operation, and the whole situation would b» changed.
