DEPARTMENTS' LOSSES.

BAD DEBTS, FIRE, THEFT. £330,320 WRITTEN OFF. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. In a few hours the House last night agreed to the writing off of £330,320, as represented by bad debts, losses on realisation of stores and other assets, and losses by fire and theft. The biggest item was £103,541, incurred by the loss on the realisation of securities held by the Department of Lands and Surveys, in return for advances made tinder the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act. Arrears of rent amounting to £14,091, due to the same Department, were also written off, and arrears of interest written oil amounted to £2088. 1

The other big lending department, the State Advances, shows a dead loss of £42,825 on the realisation of securities on the settlers' branch, a similar loss of £9344 on the workers' branch, and a further loss of £2384 011 the housing branch.

Losses amounting to £24,042 on the realisation and deflation of assets of the New Zealand Reparation Estates, and an amount of £3115 for losses on shipments of bananas from Samoa, are also shown. Losses of stores lent for use in the Hawkc's Bay earthquake area by the Defence Department amounted to £2380, and this Department also lost £14,53!) on the realisation of stores. The loss for an aeroplane which crashed is assessed at £452. Maintenance fees lost by the Health Department amounted to £8411, while the Education Department lost £6222 from the same cause. Bad debts cost the Public Works Department £6470, and a penalty on an overdue account, amounting to £2210, was remitted. The loss on the realisation of the Makomako sawmill amounted to £1311, while stores lost, stolen and broken amounted to £33 S9. The State Forest Service lost £3250 on account of bad debts. Wagons destroyed in accidents cost the Railway Department £3001. Losses on mortgages held by the Public Trust Office amounted to £5234.
