SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A social was tendered to the executive by the members of the Women's Progress Club on Wednesday afternoon at the Higher Thought Temple, Wellington Street. The temple was beautifully decorated with flowers and coloured (streamers. After the presentation of bouquets to the guests musical and. elocutionary items were given. A competition was also arranged by Mrs. Humphries.
The Taupiri Tennis Club held a dance on Thursday evening. Among those present Were: Mesdames D. McKerclier, W. Waring, Hunter, F. Wilson, jun., A. Garry, B. Stokes, R. T. Hill, N. Jackways, Misses D. The children at the Brett Memorial Home were entertained at a Christmas party in St. Peter's Parish Hall on Thursday evening by several ladies— Mesdames Close, Trill, Williamson, Heighway, Brett, Davies, Nancarrow, Forte, Symonds,. Robinson, Dunn, Gorman, Strange, Lane, Hall, the Misses E. and G. Lorie, Heighway (2), Hanson. Games of all kinds and dancing were entered into with great enthusiasm, and a very happy evening was spent. After supper an enormous clothes basket, full of toys to be put in the Christmas stockings, was placed before the Sister-in-charge—the gifts of the ladies present. At Canon Young's invitation, a vote of thanks, with musical honours, was given by the children. » # • •
Under the auspices of tho Taupiri Methodist Ladies' Guild an afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs. F. C. Day on Thursday. The winners of the croquet competitions were': Ball-peg, Mrs. G. S. Silvester; zigzag, Mrs. E. Sowman; target croquet, Mr. R Gleeson; angle croquet, Mrs. E. Sowman. A stall of fancy goods was held, and afternoon tea served. Among those present were: Mesdames T. The Women's National Reserve held; the final meeting of the year at Mrs.j Gulliver's residence on Thursday, when: there was a good attendance of mein-i bers, and Mrs. Fitchett, president, wasj in the chair. Mrs. Fitchett reported on her work in endeavouring to obtain pensions for several ex-soldiers. Christmas -gifts were brought by members for a special charge of the committee— an ex-soldier's daughter who is an invalid. At the conclusion of the meeting afternoon tea was served, and a musical programme contributed by Mrs. Harold King, who sang some originalsongs in' Maori. Mrs. Hesketh gave violin solos and Miss Donald songs, which brought to a conclusion a pleasant afternoon.
The Eden and Mount Roskill Ex-Ser-vicemen's Club held a gathering at tho Zealandia Hail, Balmoral, on Thursday night. A programme was given by Mesdames E. Asher, C. Stormont, Misses E. Woolford, Keith, Lawrence, Harvey, Lingard, Peck, and Messrs. Gear, Bruce, Matthews, Beacham, Harvey and Master Peck. Mrs. H. S. Harvey was accompanist. Amongst those present were: Mesdames B. Mr. and Mrs. K. B. Young, assisted by tho Misses Ailsa and Catherine Young, entertained a number of guests at their home, "Mainstou," Romuera, on Tuesday evening, to celebrate the eoming-of-age of their daughter Ailsa. The supper room was daintily decorated with pink sweet peas, and pink rambler roses. Bridge and dancing helped to pass an enjoyable evening. Mesdames G. Jackson and S. H. The Helensville Basketball Club hold a' dance on Thursday night in the Star Theatre, Helensville, when the winneis of the Monte Carlo were Miss Joyce Grey and Mr.' Ivan Sheffield, and the winners of the statue waltz Miss Myra O'Donnell and Mr. T. . A pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs. Sardelic, Richmond Street, Thames, to celebrate the birthday of Lester C. Jeffs. The time was passed in games and competitions. On Thursday evening the Tamaki Social and Sporting Club held a flannel dance in the Parish Hall, St. Helier's. Multi-coloured streamers decorated the hall, and coloured lights produced a brilliant effect. Tho St.'Phillip's "Girls' Club arranged supper with good taste, tho supper room presenting an ample spread. Among those present were: Mrs. Clapcott, Misses P. Wilcock, D. St. Clair Inglis, Z. A successful At Home was held by the members of the Takapuna Croquet Club on their lawns on Thursday afternoon. One session of progressive croquet was played, and competitions of clock croquet and ladder croquet were also arranged. The successful players were: Progressive croquet: A, Mrs. Beck; B, Mrs. . Blakey; hidden number, Mrs. Chapman; clock croquet, 'Mrs. Veale; ladder croquet, Mrs. Levett. Among the players were many visitors from other-clubs, Mesdames Blakey, Chapman, H. Jones (Epsom Club), Beck, Griffith, Melville (North Shore Club), Newall (Devonport), R. Johnston, Blackman, D'Esterre, Butler, Glover, Young, O'Halloran, Amodeo, Taylor, Nagle, Runeiman, Hart-Smith, Fenton, C. Arthur, Thomas, McMurtrie, Lewis, Seaton, Day, Flinn, Eobinson, Ashwin, Reynolds, Bishop, Haite, Angrove, Kenning, Morgan, Clapp, Hedges, Clapp, jun., and Misses Rowe and Butler. Mrs. Davies was in charge of a produce stall.
To raise funds for a Christmas tree for tho children of the unemployed at Birkenhead, a flannel danco was held in the Birkenhead Foresters' Hall. This was organised by a ladies' committee, comprising Misses B. Stayte, Zoe Mentzer, M. Butterw'orth, I. Bregmari, T. Couch, Sybil Mentzer, Marjorie Hall,' C. Butterworth, and E. Grenfell, assisted by representatives of tho relief workers. Mr. Reg-Kelly was' responsible for the hall decorations. : ■ Tho supper- arrangements were in charge of Mesdames A. G. Evans and J. Ht' Fitzgerald. Extras were played by Mrs. L. Kelly atid Miss I. Bregman. ? 'A ham,' given by Mr. R. E. Stott, was won by Miss J. Geddes. The statue waltz was won by Mrs. B. Gundry and Mr. Iv. Brown, the Monte Carlos by Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Mills and Mrs. A. Wilkin and Mr. W. Goodfellow. The presentation of the prizes was made by the Mayoress of Birkenhead, Mrs. G. Mills. Mrs. J. H. Fitzgerald gave a hand-worked duchess set towards the Christmas tree fund. An exhibition tap dance was given by Mr. C. N. Racket. Other items were songs by Miss J. Black, and elocutionary numbers by Miss Gwen Evans. The accompanist was Mr. Peter Black.
Miss Winifred Averill was the guest of honour ,at an At Home held yesterday afternoon, when members of the Ladies' Harbour Lights' Guild were entertained by Mrs. Preston Chambers, president of the guild, and Mrs. E. H. B. Milsom, vice-president, at "Wyata," Epsom Avenue, the lionie of Mrs. Chambers. During the afternoon Miss Averill was presented with a beaten brass shoe-box from her fel ow members of the Harbour Lights' Guild. Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Milsom received the guests, the former wearing a frock of navy blue marocain, and the latter an autumn-patterned crepe de chine frock and wide-brimmed black hat. Miss Averill was in navy blue, with hat to tone. Among those present were: Mesdames R. B. Davison, G. T. Robson, D'Arcy Folkard, T. N. Smallwood, W. J. Coutts, Gfl Burk, J. Ward, H.R. Bullimore, E. W. J. Bowden, Carter, F. M. Worrall, A. A. Nudds, C. West, T. Purdom, H. Henson, P. Kindred, Sewell, Storey, Livingstone, Tronson, Hathaway, W. Wainwright, Hemphill, L. Clark, Misses Brown, M. The Mystery Club of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cliurch, Manurewa, gave a concert in the Church Hall on Thursday evening. Choruses by Mesdames Anderson, McAnnaly, Guthrie, Seymour, White and Misses Linda Collie, Jean Mclnnes, . Susanne Gray and Vida Gray were much appreciated, as was a one-act comedy entitled "Aunt Lizzie Comes to Town," the cast being taken by Mrs. Seymour, Miss S. Gray, Mrs. McAnnaly, Mrs. White, Mrs. Anderson, Miss L. Collie, Mrs. Guthrie and Miss V. Gray. Other items were: Songs, Madame Aileen Frost, Mrs. Bell and Miss Leach, Mrs. White, Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. White. Elocutionary items were given by Mrs. Guthrie and Miss V. Gray, Misses V. and S. Gray, and Mrs. White and Miss V. Gray, Mrs. Hood. The pianist was Miss Doris Watts.
