AUSTRALIAN BILL.

£1,400,000 Remitted and Aid for

Wheatgrowers.

CHRISTMAS BOX FOR IDLE. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 9.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, this day. Tlie Financial Relief Bill, providing taxation remissions amounting to £1,400,000 and £.2,000,000 for necessitous wlieatgrowers, passed the House of Representatives. The Government has also authorised £100,000 for new works in all States to provide relief for unemployment over Christmas.

The manner in which the Federal Government's grant cf £2,000,000 for the assistance of the wheat industry should be allocated was determined by the House of Representatives yesterday. The Government gained a victory, the move for a direct bounty being defeated by 39 votes to 27. The Country party, which threatened to support the amendment for the bounty, was not united.

The effect of the decision is that the States will be free to distribute the money in any way they desire with the exception that it must not be in the form of bounty.
