NEW ZEALAND'S FIRST OAK TREE.
(Sent , in by Erena May.smor, 63, Grafton Road,. Auckland.) 1 Ne^T-. .Zealand's first oak tree was planted in Waimate North in 1831. It was .raised, from an acorn grown on Goat 'Hill, Dorset, England, and was brought out- by the: Rev. R. Davis, one of the early. C.M.S. missionaries, who arrived in the Bay of Islands in the brig Maquarie on August 15, 1824. Mr. ; Davis planted the acorn on the mission station at Paihia. After a while the house .was burned down, but the tree was preserved from destruction by being covered , with wet blankets. It is said that Mr. Davis left, the care of his furniture to his fellow missionaries while he looked after the safety of the tree, fr In 1831 Mr. Davis removed to the then new mission station at Waimate North, taking with him the young oak tree, which he planted where it now stands.
