RACING AT TAKAPUNA.

THE SPRING MEETING. MAORI BOY WINS CUP. DEAD-HEAT IN PLATE. The spring meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club opened at Devonport on Saturday. There was a good attendance, and the weather, with the exception of a showsr about the time the clip came up for decision, was fine till just before the last race, when heavy rain set in and lasted till after the totalisator dosed. In consequence speculation on the final event was affected. There was a good attendance, and the coitrsc was in excellent order. During the day the hum of £20,341 13/ was put through the machine, compared with £22,074 15/ for the corresponding day last year, a decrcasa of £2433. Outsider Wins Alison Cup. When the field paraded for the Alison Cup Speedmint, Eager Rose and Helium were absent, the popular fancies being Royal Artist ( £767), Great Emblem (£701) and Volimond (£324). The winner, Maori Boy, carried £121 and paid a good double figure dividend. When they were let go Maori Boy and Refresher were soon in front and led past the stand from Gay Cockade, Teels and Great Emblem, who were bunched. Then came Royal Artist, Volimond and Tarporley. Along the back Maori Boy and Refresher were clear of Gay Cockade and Great Emblem, who were on terms with Royal Artist and Teels, together, next. Then came Alloy, Tarporley, Volimond and Gay Idea. Great Emblem ran up second to Maori Boy crossing the top, the pair being attended by liefreeher, Koval Artist and Tarporley, with Gay Idea well back. There was no change entering the straight and in a sterling finish Tarporley failed ip reach Maori Boy by a neck, with. Gay Idea, who came fast, the same distance away. Royal Artist was next, then came Refresher, Great Emblem, Teels, Alloy, Volimond and Gay Cockade. /The time registered- for the race, 2.22 3-5, was a record for the course. . The Juvenile Event. Gay Sheila, Pelagia and Bonnie Joyce were withdrawn from the Cambria Handicap and Corohis" ( £857)' was accorded most support, though Gay Seton ( £508) and Star Artist (£458) also got solid hacking. ■Rereatu began test from Jjeputy Ruler, Gay, Seton; Coronss. and ■Star Artist, with Enjoyment next, but Coronis hit the front crossing the top, attended by Rereatu, Deputy Ruler, Enjoyment and Star Artist, who were/well bunched. Coronis led into the straight with Rereatu next and Gay Seton moving up fast and holding his own in the run home won by a neck from Gay Seton, who beat Star Artist by threequarters of a length. Deputy Ruler, Enjoyment and Rereatu were the next to finish. ,

A Good Finish. Scratching were numerous in the Takapuna Plate, the defections being Delrain, Holly Holm, Lord Aintree, Princess Bede, Puss Moth, Royal Gallant, Gigantic and Senorita. In a- good letting race Whakapara ( £633) and King's Knave (£630) were in most demand, with Prolyxo ( £378) also strongly supported, and the public were right on the niark. When they were let go Prolyxo led from Imamint, Whakapara, Supreme Kuler and Glenvane. Then came Lucidu«, Mungatoon, King's Knave and Psychologist. Lucidus and Prolyxo led acroes the top with Imamint and Whakapara close up. Tlien came. Mungatoon, Glenvane and King's Knave. Whakapara replaced Imamint turning for home, the order of the others being the same, and in t great finish Whakapard. and Kings Knave crossed the line together, the iudge awarding a dead-heat, with Prolvxo three-quaTters of a length away. Glenvane, Imamint, Lucidus, Mungatoon, Psychologist and Supreme Ruler were tfie next to finish. Bell Topper Beaten. THnmiuagh was the only withdrawal from the Tiri High-weight Handicap, R nd Bell Topper ( £771) was favourite, with Catch 'Em ( £655) and Glenrata ( £475) also in strong demand. Going out of the. straight Bell Topper was showing the way to Master Norval, Principal, Catch Era, and Wee Prince, and the first-named pair raced across the, back on terms, with Catch 'Em, Principal, and Wee Prince bunched. Then followed Eldora, Royal Survey, Glenrata, and Sub-editor. Crossing the top Bell Topper and Master Norval were still together and then came Glenrata, Catch 'Em, Principal, Royal Survey, and Wee Prince. There was no change in the running as the field turned for home, and in. a hard finish Master Norval beat Bell Topper by a neck, with Glenrata a head away. Catch 'Em was fourth, followed bv Sub-editor, Principal, Royal Survey, Eldora, and Royal England. Limex Wins Ponui. Prolyxo and Holly Holm dropped out of the- Ponui Handicap, and the final- figures were adjusted Limex ( £750), Senorita ( £485) and Bugle Call ( £382) were in most favour, and they finished in that order. Senorita began best,from Limex, Sweet Whisper, Hawthorn, Miss Rewa and Echo Song, and crossing the top the order was, Senorita, Sweet Whisper, Limex, Miss Rewa, Echo Song and Hawthorn. There was no fhange in the running as the field turned for home, and Limex stayed on win by a length, from Senorita, with Biigle Call two lengths away. Sweet Whisper, Hawthorn, Arch Ruler, Echo Song, Demylus, On Approval and Miss Rewa were next. The committee meeting of the Waipa Racing Club on Friday evening was presided over by Mr". J. T. There were also present: Messrs. S. A. Empson, A. 11. Storey, J. P. O'Sullivan, M. H. Tims, W. Alexander and- J. G. Wynyard (secretary). The programme sub-committee's action in revising the programme to meet the district committee's suggestions was approved.. It was necessary to include two Hat events of at least one mile, and the Paterangi Handicap was accordingly lengthened to one mile. Programmes had beeu issued, w*th the Hack Cup (six furlongs) following the Te Awamutu Cup, the Paterangi Handicap (one mile) the sixth races just preceding the - 1 lying Handicap (six furlongs). The Te Awamutu Golf Club asked if arrangements could be made for playing coif on the racecouse property. It was decided that the club's course committee confer with representatives of the (jolt Club to discuss preliminaries. It was reported that the number board and judge's box had both been shifted to approved positions. The judges box was moved further back from the course. Nominations for all events close at 5 p.m. on Friday, with the secretary, Mr. t ft Wvnvard, Te Awamutu, or Messrs. Blomfiekl and Co., Shortland Street, Auckland.
