TWO ESCAPEES.
BORSTAL PRISONERS.
STOLEN VAN ABANDONED.
MOTOR CAB NOW MISSING.
Two inmates of the Waikeria Borstal Institution, Arthur Albert Clayton, aged 20, and Graham Wilfred Morton, 21, who escaped at three o'clock on Saturday afternoon from the prison, have not yet been recaptured.
After they made their escape it was discovered that a light motor van belonging to the Cambridge Electric Power Board, had been stolen at Leamington, near Cambridge. The escapees are suspected by the police of having stolen the van, as Morton is known to be an experienced driver.
A Cambridge taxi driver states that about 11.30 on Saturday night he passed two men wearing dungarees. They were on the road near the high level bridge i t Leamington and when he approached them they moved well over to the side of the road to avoid being seen. It was thought that these two men were the escaped prisoners who had come down the To Awamutu road.
The van owned by the Cambridge Power Board was found abandoned at Okoroire yesterday afternoon, some time after a five-seater touring car, painted a greyish green, belonging to p. Goodwin, had been stolen from <fe;rc. It is thought by the police that the car was taken by the two escapees who left the van behind them. The registered number of the stolen car is 50-770.
