UTILITY OF SHORTHAND.

Fifty years ago those who wrote shorthand in Auckland could be counted 011 your fingers. But technical and business colleges have taught "the winged art" to hundreds of young people, and, aided by the invention of the typewriter, shorthand is admittedly invkluable in business. But the public has not yet recognised that "business" is only one of the least uses to which a knowledge of shorthand could be put. To be able to put into permanent form one's own thoughts, or the communications of others as fast as deliberate thinking can bo done, would be of inestimable value, not only to professional persons but to the whole community. In particular it would be especially . useful, to every, student in our- schools, from primary schools up to the University. . It would enable them to- take down notes of science, history, etc., with but a fraction of the time and labour that they waste upon the task, incidentally ruining their ordinary writing. "And how easy and pleasant composition would become. The introduction of shorthand into our schools would make a revolution in education. h h;RBEB.T MASON.
