YACHTING.

RICHMOND CRUISING CLUB. forty-four boats start TOGETHER. CLUBHOUSE OPENED. Saturday was a red-letter day in the history of the Richmond Cruising Club. The new clubhouse at Sloane's Beach was opened by the president, Mr. Jas. Donald, at 3 o'clock. Shortly after, 44 boate started off the clubhouse in a big general handicap, which was won by Suzette, the smallest boat in the race. Paroro, a new V class boat, was second, Celox, the well-known 26-footer, was third, and Demon, the smart Y class boat, fourth. Promptly at .3 o'clock the commodore Mr. T. L. Thompson, welcomed the gathering of representatives from sister clubs and over 100 members and friends, and requested Mr. Donald to open the clubhouse. In declaring the clubhouse open, Mr. Donald congratulated the club on its advancement and the fact that the building was opened free of debt, largely due to the efforts of Mr. Ivo. Dennes, to whom he presented a life member's certificate.

The 44 boats started across a line between the launch Cyrena, moored off the clubhouse, and a mark to the west. The entries totalled 50, but there were a few absentees.

The boats were dispatched at 3.40 p.m., nearly all the lleet crossing the line within a minute of gunfire. It was a wonderful sight to see so many boats, all skilfully handled, and with every sail drawing its best as tliej- made across the harbour on the first leg of the course towards Northcotc.

On the lead across, Celox, Paroro, Drone, Avro, Demon and Jilatarere drew a little ahead of the big fleet. Celox was first to Jiaul on the wind after rounding tlie mark, with Taroro second and Drone third. Rounding this mark Rahiri and Nomad collided. Rahiri's mainsail was split and Nomad lost her bowsprit. Spray was entangled, but drew clear without danger.

All stood inshore- on port and then out again on starboard, working up in the tideway to the Pile beacon. Celox led throughout, and the first round saw Celox cross at 4h 4m Is, Paroro 4h 4m 40s, Drone 4h 6m 40s.

It was now a broad lead on port to the Rona buoy for the yacond time, and Celox improved her position. On the close haul on starboarl tack from Rona buoy to the finishing line the bigger boats were able to wipe out some uf the smaller boats' handicap.

The finishing times were: Celos (scr), 4h 36m 21s: Paroro (om), 4h 40m 6s: Avro (6m), 4h 43m 10s; Marianne (sm). 4h 43m 20s; Demon (7m), 4h 43m 345; Matarere (Gm), 4h 44m 465; Awahou (sm), 4h 45m 3s: Drone (Hm), 4h 45m 20s; Mystic (6111), 4h 45m 245; Sea Crest" (10m), 4h 46m 48s; Wild Wave (Sm), 4h 48m 13s; Marere (4Jm), 4h 4Sm 355; Namu, 4h 40m 365; Swiftsure, 4h 51in ss; Opah, 4h 53m 17s; Desert Gold, 4h 03m 375; Stormy, 4h 53m 445; Kea, 4h 53m 535; Waitoa, 4h 54m 465; Eleanor, 4h 55m 50s; Toss Up, 4h 58m 20s; Kathleen, 4h 58m 3Ss; Nyria, 41i 59m 31s; Waitea, Oh 0m 16s; Suzette, Oh 3m 30s; Pliaola, 5h 4m 28s.
