FIRST DAY AT THE SHORE.

MAORI BOY WINS ALISON CUP.

LADY QUEX IS OPEN SPRINT VICTOR.

After a showery morning the weather is fine for the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's spring meeting, at Devonport, and the track is in excellent condition. There is a good attendance. Blandford and Roman Mascot paid the dividends in the opening race, in which the favourite, Kahau, was unplaced. In a small field for the open sprint, the top-weight, Lady Quex, won from Exaggeration and Paganelli. High Comedy broke a blood vessel and expired. The consistent Marigold was too good for Royal Gallant and Currajong in the Spring Hack. The principal handicap at the meeting, the Alison Cup, resulted in a victory for Maori Boy over Tarporley and Gay Idea.
