The Goat and Compasses is a curious inn name. There are two possible explanations. Some hold that the real name is "God Encompass Us/* a battlecry of Cromwell's Ironsides. It is pos-i sible, though, that originally the name was simply the Goat, and that the compasses, a Masonic emblem, were added; to show that the owner had become aj freemason.
