LAVA HOUSES.
A SOVIET SCHEME.
Petrified lava used in Ani, the ancient capital of Armenia, which was burned a thousand years ago by an eruption of the Alagize volcano, is utilised in building modern Soviet houses. Excavating the ruins of the old city, explorers found that all of its houses were constructed of a sort of light stone, in various natural colours, which turned out to be petrified lava. Plentiful deposits of this are in the vicinity. Samples of the material were sent to Moscow, and builders decided its various hues would harmonise with the Byzantine effect of Moscow's architecture.
