LONDON, November 20,
In the absence of any authorised statement, it is suggested that President von Hindenburg has not entirely ruled out Herr Hitler's claim to the Chancellorship, but has insisted on conditions,-such as the adherence to ,the gold standard and Herr von Papen's economic programme with the enforcement of import quotas.'
Hitler counts on receiving the support of the Catholics, the People's party and some smaller parties to give him a Reichstag majority, ;
The President received Dr. Alfred Hugenberg, Nationalist, Dr. Eduard Dingeldey, People's party, and Dr. Ludwig Kass, Centre party. The result is being kept secret.'
The President met Herr Hitler and had an hour's conference with him. Later Herr Hitler refused .to discuss the proceedings beyond saying it was a good beginning. It is believed that Marshal von Hindenburg desired Herr Hitler to ascertain what support he could obtain in the- formation of a Cabinet. The Hitlerites are optimistic as to the outcome for him, in regard to his claim to the Chancellorship.
It is rumoured in other quarters that Herr Hitler is chastened as the result of his party's loss of seats at the recent election and may not be as stubborn as formerly. Moreover it is said that he fears the raising of the age of enfranchisement from JjO to 25, which is certain if the von Papen regime is perpetuated.
The fact that the Foreign Minister, Baron von Neurath, has gone to Geneva suggests that he expects to retain the portfolio and to negotiate with authority. ' .
