SHAPING BETTER.

ENGLAND MAY LEAD,

AUSTRALIAN INNINGS.

NINE WICKETS FOB 216.

MELBOURNE, November 20.

The cricket match England versus an Australian eleven was continued on Saturday at Melbourne. The weather was fine and cool, and the wicket was in splendid condition.

There were 53,000 spectators, and the receipts totalled £3600.

When stumps were drawn on Friday England, batting first, had made 23S runs for eight wickets, Allen (12) and Duckworth (3) being not out. The visitors' innings closed for 282, and Australia had lost nine wickets.for 216 at the close of play yesterday.

Allen and Duckworth resumed batting. Allen opened brightly, .scoring three fours oil Ironmonger's second over. He added 20 in 10 minutes. Duckworth was content to defend his wicket, and batted another 25 minutes without scoring. Allen was in 110 minutes for his 48, and hit seven boundaries. Nasli showed better pace in his bowling.

The Australians began their first innings at 1 p.m. Runs came slowly at first. Soon after luncheon Woodfull received a nasty blow in the chest from Larwood, who was making the ball fly. Woodfull was batting 71 minutes for 18. Bradman made some remarkably clever pulls off Bowes' "bumpers," but was too reckless at times, both in stealing runs (with several narrow escapes) and pulling off balls. He lost his wicket in attempting such a hit. He had batted 46 minutes for 36, including four boundaries. O'Brien was stolid but neat. He stayed 158 minutes for 46 and hit ono four. Three wickets were down for 131. Bowes was then bowling very accurately, and Larwood was maintaining a good pace. Lee gave a bright display, making 28 in 36 minutes, including two fours. However, the bowlers were definitely superior throughout. Bamett, the Victorian 'keeper, took Oldfield's place. Larwood bowled 13 overs and Bowes 15, including two maidens. Allen did not bowl owing to a slight strain. Scores:— • ENGLAND. —First Innings.
