NEW ZEALAND'S GOOD BARGAIN.

"Liberal" says England (I suppose he meant Great Britain) did not "dictate." I used the word "interfered." If Great Britain is not interfering in our domestic affairs, why is a British representative appearing in the personnel of the Tariff Board? If Great Britain by her interference does not hope to retard the development of our manufacturing industries and so gain a larger share of our trade, why does she interfere? Why should the Dominions be the tillers of the soil and the hewers of wood for Britain's industrial populations at a price that yields no commensurate return? Primary production will never absorb those now unemployed, or provide careers for our growing youth. Their only hope is in the development of our manufacturing industries. May I join issuo with "Liberal" when lie states, "If England cannot give goods in exchange, she cannot purchase at all." _ Will "Liberal" explain how Britain paid the adverse trade balances, amounting to £70,000,000, to Denmark and the Argentine in 1931? This amount is almost three times the adverse trading balance between Great Britain and New Zealand. The statement that the U.S.A. is a free trade country has been heard before, but the whole of the States of the U.S.A. arc surrounded by high protective walls. CHARLES J. WARD. tit has been officially stated that the personnel of the Tariff Board will not include a representative of Britain.— Ed.]
