i . » DOMINION TOURNAMENT. B. J. SMITH, JUN., IN THIRD ROUND OF AMATEUR. MILLARD AND WYNNE DIE GAME. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Players in the second rounds of the New Zealand amateur and professional golf championships at Heretaunga were severely tested all day by a strong westerly -wind which came across the links in gusts. The greens were consequently very fast and tricky. In • the professional matches there were no surprises. Shaw (the 1028-9-31 champion), who was 3 up against J. A. Clements in the morning, increased his lead to 5 up at the turn. He had an admiring gallery which afterwards attached itself in a great measure to the amateur match between H; A. Black (1930 champion) and Millard. This was the best of the day. Millard, who was in form in the morning, had a lead of 1. After lunch the first hole was halved and a slice into a bunker cost Millard the second, making the match square. Black eventually won, 2 and 1. He should have won at the 15th, but strangely missed a putt of inches. Bartleet (Middlemore), who was 4 down against Wagg (1931 champion) in the morning, continued steady in the afternoon, but the morning lapse had been fatal. It takes more than steadiness to wrest a lead of 4 up from a player of Wagg's calibre. During the day Arthur Duncan (1926 champion) had four stymies to deal with in his match with Ray Blank, and dealt with all successfully. Blank's putting was poor, but his recoveries were first rate. At the 13th in the afternoon he holed a 60yds approach for a three. Duncan's golf was but average. His greatest superiority all day was his putting. T. H. Horton is playing fine all-round irolf. He was round in 72 in the morning and as good in the afternoon. ■ The Goss-Wynne (Hamilton) match was another in which the issue swung uncertainly throughout the afternoon, Goss (1923 champion) just managing to keep in front. The Fryer-Mills match was the only one to require an extra hole. Basil Smith, jun. (Akarana), is the only Auckland amateur to survive, Thomas (Glendowie) falling to Whyte after leading 1 up on the morning round. The amateur stroke handicap match was won by W. G. Fisher, 73—3—70. G. H. 3cott was second with 83 —10 —73. Second round results (in order of draw): — Professional Championship. A. J. Shaw beat J. A. Clements, 7 and 5. F. Branch beat C. C. Clements, 9 and 8. E. J.
