HEALING BY FAITH.
Bishop Cherrington says that the Anglican Church is prepared to practise unction, and the laying on of hands, to heal the sick, when called upon to do so. Let us be fair. It is not unknown. in the history of medicine for a layman to lead the way in the use of a drug or process to cure disease. If Mr. Dallimore has awakened the Church "to the extent of its powers, and shown by demonstration that there are many cases which derive benefit from encouragement in faith, it is beside the mark to question, his motives, or to inquire into the actual extent' of the healing accomplished, ifi some has been done. Suppose that the Scripture is intended to teach us that there is latent in all of us' a power which can be aroused by outside aid : when not available in all without it; that the general neglect of this power leaves much sickness unrelieved; and that the disciples, were not alone gifted as wielders o£ the required influence (even those opposed to them sometimes used it); why should we be astonished to find a man, believing this, who put» it to the test, crudely enough, but publicly, risking abuse and charges of fraud? As'a? doctor said last week, if the performer ;<>fhealing actions is sincere and does more good than harm, we should leave him to be judged, as all of us are judged, by his works. SJo sinful thing can' exist for long, except among wholly sinful people, and one hesitates to believe that Mr. Dallimore's great congregations contain no really good and spiritual persons with courage to condemn, and who would condemn, a sham evangelist who did nothing to prove his worth. MEDICUS,
