There is no doubt that if there is one particular class of Investor who requires help and protection it is that comprising those who have only a small amount ot capital available. The money commanded hv the Investor of this class is not only limited, but it generally represents hardwon earnings, and, bavin# been sot together bv thrift and sacrifice, very often over a considerable period of time, should ~ no '* under any circumstances, be risked iu speculation. Such an Investor is'the most likely to fall into the financial traps which await the unwary, and lie is prey of the smait canvasser and salesman. The desire to increase his small capital often leads him into hopeless forms of investment, and alluring promises of wealth dangled before his eyes lilind his judgment, prompting him to risk his money in ventures which have no chance of success. First and foremost, the man with limited capital should NEVER touch new notations or speculative shares of any description. and. as ho is generally inexperienced, lie should obtain the soundest and best advice available BEFORE investing in anything, excepting only the placing of his money in the Savings Bank. Now, outside the placing of his money in the Savings Bank, the Small Investor can, with safety, do only four things—

(1) Invest In Tost Office Investment Certificates or Government Bonds. (2) Place his money on deposit in a Strong. Well-established Financial Institution. . . (3) Riiv under advice, and at a discount,. Shares in Old,, Weil-established Building Societies. (4) Purchase Gilt-edged Debenture?, and Sound Preference Shares In otrong Companies. With the exception of a very few specially stable, undoubted Ordinary Shares in certain well-established concerns liKf the Auckland Gas Company and particular Insurance Companies, he should absolutely and entirely eschew- Ordinary Shares altogether. If the man with limited capital devotes Ills money to buying any of (lie foregoing AT THE BEST OX THE MARKET he will avoid risks, and obtain the, best rate of return possible with safety, whereas if he indulges in other forms of investment he is very liable to losses which he cannot afford. lie is not like the wealthy man. who can afford '' to dabble round " and lose. One mistake, and all his small capital is gone. The pafhs of outside investments are so set. about with dangers that a loss sooner or later is certain. ABOVE ALL if the Small Investor does seek investments outside the Savings Bank, lie should ALWAYS GET THE ADVICE of a reputable, competent Stockbroker before buying anything, even when he Invests In anv of the avenues mentioned. Such advice and help are always available to him from reputable Stockbrokers generally, and no charge is ever made, nor is an Investor placcd under any obligation by seeking It.
