SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS.

SHATTER'S GOOD EFFORT.

FAST PASSAGE GOES NICELY.

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

The semi-final gallops for the New Zealand Cup, Stewards' Handicap, and other events took place at Riccarton this morning, when the outside of the course proper was available for fast work. A specially interesting trial was that in which the Cup candidates, Shatter, Korokio, and Minerval. and the Derby and Stewards' Handicap candidate Silver Ring participated, all carrying very light weights. Xne set off from the nine-furlong post, and Silver King established a' break of several lengths, but Shatter joined issue in the straight, and beat him home narrowly. An easterly wind helped the horses along the back, but retarded them coming down the straight. The going was a trifle dead early. Kakara ran seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. Muff reduced the time to 1.30 2-5, the last half taking 51 l-ss. Silver Scorn (Eastwood) jumped off from the mile, and was picked up by Meprisant at the five furlongs. Travelling well within herself the filly registered 1.45, the last seven furlongs taking 1.32 2-5. Riri was very eager to gallop when his turn came for a seven furlong trial, in which Berate accompanied him. Riri had his head in front at the finish, and the time was 1.31 3-5. Chopin, who beat Jaloux by several lengths in a mile gallop yesterday, was let off with an easy task. Cadland and The Quorn were sent five furlongs, and did it comfortably in 1.3 2-5. Red Heckle's Mile. Red Heckle went attractively while running the last mile of nine furlongs in 1.42 2-5. A mile in 1.44 3-5 was run by Rocket and Fleeting Glance. Shatter (H. Mackinnon), Silver Ring (A. Russell), Korokio (J. Gunn), and Minerval (A. H. Eastwood) were associated over nine furlongs. All of these riders are light, but Shatter and Silver Ring had an advantage in this respect. Silver Ring gathered speed very rapidly, and soon had a lead of several lengths. He went from mile to half mile in 50s. Shatter closed on the leader in the straight and beat him, but not by much. The pair were clear of Minerval, with Korokio several lengths away. The last mile was run in 1.41 3-5. Shatter pleased greatly. Silver Ring went much better than on Tuesday, and the way he hung on after the pace he set at the outset created a good impression. Tout le Mond had Adelphi for company over five furlongs in 1.6. Grecian Prince used No. 6 grass for a seven-furlong gallop, and ran the last six in 1.17 2-5. The improving Helen Gold, who is an Oaks candidate, just beat Grampian' over a mile in 1.43 3-5. Carrying plenty of weight, Grand Reviewran seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5. Great Star did a similar trip comfortably in 1.33 3-5. Gay Crest, who is suffering from a slight mouth trouble, worked on the lead. Cricket Bat Improves. Cricket Bat covered seven furlongs nicely in 1.30. Fast Passage had Drum Fire for a companion over a mile and a quarter. The three-year-old quickly established a lead of several lengths, but Fast Passage gradually overhauled him, and beat him home by two lengths. The last mile was run in 1.44 2-5, and the last half mile in 535. Joined by Hurlingham at the six-furlong post, Ranekgh ran a mile in 1.43 2-5. Top Rank beat Cheaip Money over half a mile in 50 2-ss. Rational 11. took the same time. Ramo, Earthquake, and Concentrate were associated over a mile and a quarter. A. H. Eastwood rode Concentrate, and the other two had light boys up.' Concentrate beat Ramo by a neck, with Earthquake two lengths away. The last mile was run in 1.44 2-5, but Concentrate's time would be better, as he gave away several lengths at the start from that point. Sharp Thorn and Wise Choice went seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5.

Arrivals from the North to-day were: Pahu, Historic, Eminent,* Eed Sun, Normandy, Minstrel Lad, Arrow Lad. Red Manfred and Fracas ran half a mile down the straight five furlongs in 49 2-se.
