COUNTRY PARTY.
CHANGE OF NAME SOUGHT.
INCREASED SUPPORT CLAIMED
"APPEAL IN HIGH QUARTERS."
The future of the New Zealand Country; party was referred to at some length at a meeting of the executive of the Rotorua electorate held at v Matamata. It was decided "That in the opinion of the Rotorua executive the time has definitely arrived when the name of the Country party should be changed so as to embrace more new organisations, which are springing up throughout the Dominion, and whose aims are included in the platform of the Country party, which platform has been specially designed to give the greatest good to the greatest number."
Mr. D. B. Higgins (Matamata), said great headway was being made. The party was gaining solidly in strength, and its platform was making a strong appeal in many high quarters, as being the only one which was likely to do New Zealand any good. It was interesting to note that planke of their platform were now 'being adopted by other parties. ■ In -view of certain happenings he moved that the annual, meeting be adjourned. : '
Mr. P. Hawke (Hinuera) was strongly of the opinion that, the name of the party should be changed. It was the one national platform before electors, yet most people thought, because of the name, that it was purely a farmers' party.
Mr. J. Shine (Putaruru) said he wa# not fighting eolely for farmers, but for everyone in New Zealand.. Various currency leagues and other 'bodies which were advocating planks of the platform of the Country party were springing up and it was only right that these bodies should be given a chance of co■opersiing.
