APPRECIATION OF ART.
Dr. H. B. Wallace gave an address on the interpretation of pictures at the Art Gallery yesterday afternoon. He illustrated his talk from Medici prints. He drew attention to the subjects, details of composition and harmony, and significance of their colour schemes. He said that at the first approach the subject of the picture was of paramount importance, but as one advanced in appreciation pictures became more like music in their subtle and intangible appeal. Some of the greatest works of the masters needed no description or interpretation in words, but could be enjoyed without being understood.
