TYRANNY OF FASHION.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales may wear a "boater" with impunity, but seemingly not so the ordinary male. A local gentleman of business purchased a straw hat, "bun" or "boater." It was admired by friends and relatives in the seclusion of his home. He boldly sallied forth next morning, full of vim and vigour. Being early, the tramcar (he was an ordinary male) was filled with manual labourers. Many and pointed were the remarks heard on fashion's latest whim in gentlemen's headwear. The victim of this unwonted attention was so reduced to a state of lowliness and self-loathing that he disembarked from the blind side of the tramcar and surreptitiously crept in the back entrance of his business premises. His better half, hurriedly summoned to the telephone, forwarded his less obtrusive "bowler," and thus he was able to mingle with his fellow citizens, unnoticed and unremarked. L. DUNN.
