SURTAX ON IMPORTS.
DATE OF REMOVAL.
CUSTOMS TARIFF REVISION,
Following upon representations made by the Otago Importers and Shippers Association that the proposed removal ot the surtax on British goods should be made retrospective to the date of the Government's announcement, 4he question was discussed byv the Wellington Importers' Association. Mr. J. Myers said that the matter was one of considerable importance to _ importers and was making the position diflicult. Some importers were clearing shipments which had arrived in the last few days, but other importers were leaving their shipments in bond.
It was decided to make representations to the Government on similar . lines to those made by Otago. The chairman, Mr. E. Salmond, drew attention to the controversy which was occurring in regard 'to the proposed revision of the Customs tariff. The Government was being bombarded with conflicting representations from different bodies, and he believed that this was having the effect of making its already difficult task a great deal more difficult. Business men generally were agreed on the necessity for a well-balanced, well-modelled tariff, Mr. Salmond said. '• • L, ''''~ It was decided to ask the NeUr Zealand Importers' Federation to endeavour to arrange a conference with manufacturers and primary producers to discuss the mutter.
