CROQUET.
MONT LE GRAND CLUB. The official opening of the Mont le Grand Croquet Club took place on Saturday in the presence of a large gathering. The visitors were welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. 1. Mc.Nnb, who said the greens appeared to be in much better condition than was the case a year ago. Mr. A. J. Stallworthy. M.P., also extended felicitations to the players. The president of the Auckland Croquet Association, Mrs. ,T. Hamilton, who was accompanied by the secretary, Mrs. Keesiug, extended congratulations and best wishes from her executive. Referring to the departure from the district of Mrs. Cole, she expressed the hope that the club would uncartli another champion as a successor to that excellent representative. Mrs. Hamilton referred to the growth of the game in Auckland, and said that the members of affiliated clubs, particularly in the B and C grades, had increased considerably. Qn the inter-club week-day, Tuesday, she understood that fullv 400 croquet players were visiting the various greens. The first ball was then' played by the president, Mrs. B. Peckham, and games were proceeded with. The games resulted as follows: —First prize, Mrs. Robertson (Mount Albert). First B Mrs. Mickleborough. Hidden number. Mrs. Thomas (A), Mrs. Matthews- 0) ; booby prizes, Mrs. Bush (A), Mrs. Scott There is in the Royal Observatory at Greenwich a clock which has never varied more than one-twentieth of a second in a day. There are equally accurate clocks in the observatories of Leyden, Berlin and Washington.
