CHILD DRINKS CAUSTIC.
FOUND IN EMPTY HOUSE. CORONER'S GENERAL WARNING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. The dangers of leaving caustic soda within the reach of children were pointed out yesterday by the coroner. Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., during the inquest into the*fleath of Shirley Ethel Briant, aged three, in Wellington Hospital on September 16. Caustic, especially in liquid form, could inflict terrible burns, said the coroner, and it behoved everyone not to leave any lying about. Tile litle girl found some liquid caustic in a vacant house near her own home, and drank i,t. She was taken to hospital suffering from burns, and was treated for three weeks before being discharged. She was later readmitted to hospital, in a very weak condition, suffering from ulceration of her gullet. An operation was performed, but she died soon after.
Tlie coroner said he was satisfied the operation was necessary, and that it was properly performed. 1
