I PREPARING FOR SUMMER. A DAINTY TENNIS JUMPER. (Conducted by TINKERBELL.) Dear Girls,— With summer nearly upon us prospect of long days spent in the sunshine, one's thoughts naturally switch in relief and delight to the problems of summer clothes. The dainty sleeveless tennis jumper illustrated in this column is quite the latest fashion and can be made from 6oz of 4-ply wool. One pair of No. S and one pair of No. 10 knitting needles are used. Work at a tension to produce six stitches to one inch in width and eight rows to one inch in depth. Measurements: Length from the shoulder, 22 inches; width all round under the arms, 37 inches. It must be specially noted that in these instructions decreasing is to be done in the following manner: Knit two stitches together at the beginning ofc a row or at the neck edge, and work slip one knit one, pass the slipped stitch over at the end of a row or at neck end. Begin at lower edge of front. Cast on 112 stitches on No. 10 needles and work in knit one and purl one rib for four inches. Change to stocking stitch and No. 8 needles and continue until work measures 8 \ inches from the beginning, finishing after a purl row. It is now time to begin the neck opening. First row: Knit 50; moss stitch 12 (beginning with purl one). Knit 50. Second row: Purl 50; moss stitch 12, purl 50. Repeat these two rows twice more. Seventh row: Knit 50, moss stitch six. Leave wool hanging, join on another ball of wool, moss stitch six, knit 50. Eighth row: Purl 50, moss stitch six. Change wool, moss stitch six, purl 50. Now continue backwards and forwards on these two sets of 56 stitches using two balls of wool, but at same time decreasing one stitch at each side of neck (inside moss stitch border) on

next knitted row, and then on every sixth row ' following until work measures 14 inches from beginning, finishing after a purl row (49 stitches left). You have now reached the armhole. Continue to decrease at neck edges when, necessary, hut at the same time work armholes as follows:— First row: Moss stitch 12, knit to neck, moss stitch ste. Change wool, moss stitch six, knit to end, working last 12 stitches in moss stitch. Second row: Moss stitch 12, purl to neck, moss stitch six. Change wool, moss stitch six, purl to end, working last 12 moss stitch. Repeat these two rows twice more. Seventh row: Cast off six, moss stitch six, work to neck, moss stitch six. Change wool, moss stitch six, knit to end, working last 12 in moss stitch. Eighth row: Cast off six, purl to neck, moss stitch six. Change wool, moss stitch six, purl to end, working last six moss stitch. Now decrease one stitch at armhole edges on next knit row and then on every fourth row following until four have been decreased at each side. Continue without decreasing at armhole edges, but still decreasing on neck edges, until 30 sltitches remain, then work without decreasing until armhole edges measure 7J inches on the straight. Cast off. Cast on 112 stitches for back on No. 10 needles and ■ work four inches in knit one and purl one rib. Change to stocking stitch and No. 8 needles and continue until work measures 14 inches from beginning, finishing after a purl row. Now begin armholes. First row: Moss stitch 12, knit 88, muss stitch 12. Second row: Moss stitch 12, purl 88, moss stitch 12. Repeat these two rows twice more. Seventh row: Cast off six, moss stitch six, knit 88, moss stitch 12. Eighth row: Cast off six, moss stitch six, purl 88, moss stitch six. Now decrease one stitch at each side of armhole on every fourth row four times, then continue without decreasing until armhole edges measure 6 J inches on the straight, finishing after a purl row. Next row: Moss stitch six, knit 18, moss stitch 44, knit 18, moss stitch six. Next row: Moss stitch six, purl 18, moss stitch 44, purl 18, moss stitch six. Repeat these two rows twice more. Cast off. Press work on both sides with a warm iron and damp cloth. Sew shoulder edges together and press seams, then sew up side seams and press them. Start knitting your tennis jumper now, girls, so that it will be quite ready for wear when the summer weather sets in.
