"BATH CHAIRS."
The name "Bath chair" originated in Bath, where the type of chair was introduced. About 1740 Bath had a high position in the fashionable world. The wealthy could scarcely go abroad in the conditions in which they had to travel in those days; the seaside habit had not yet started, and for most great people there existed only two cities —London and Bath. Popular first as a "cure," on account of its famous- waters, Bath soon became fashionable for the hale as well as the sick, and society as a whole spent a considerable portion of the year at Bath. .Roads were abominable, and the fashionable were carried in the eedan chair of the day. Heavy and costly, inconvenient and needing at least two chairmen, the sedan was beaten by the chair invented by Mr. James Heath, of Bath. Hence "Bath" chair.
