ENDIVE.
Endive is a most useful companion to lettuce, and in the autumn, winter and early spring it is a most valuablo salad plant. To obtain good specimens, 6ecd should be sown about the iirst week in December, and the last sowing made in January. The plants should be fully grown by April; after that they do not niako much growth. Endive is always •tough and stripgy if it is not properly blanched, and this can only be done by tying each plapt up and keeping it in
the dq,rk. There are about a dozen varieties of endive, but the best are Improved Batavian and green curled, the former being mostly grown. This salad plant requires about the same treatment as that given to lettuce. Gopd rich soil and plenty of moisture at the roots when at all dry, while frequent hoeings between the plants will prove beneficial.
