FUTURE OF THAMES.
COMMISSIONER WELCOMED. APPEAL FOR CO-OPERATION". _____ j (By Telegraph.—Own CorrespondentV THAMES, Friday. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening a hearty welcome was extended by Mr. C. S. Donovan to the newly-appointed. commissioner, Mr. C. L. Grange. Mr. Donovan said the chamber in March last stressed the need for the appointment of a commissioner. In acknowledging the welcome, Mr. Grange said that while Thames at th® moment was unable to meet its commitments, an understanding Government had provided a moratorium, a breathing space to enable them to get back to a sound basis. The commissioner said there appeared to be an impression in some quarters that the expense of a commissioner was a heavy load for th® borough in difficult times, but the expenses would really be borne by th® debenture holders.
The commissioner appealed to ratepayers who were in arrears to be frank and give him their confidence regarding their difficulties. The more he knew of their affairs the better able he would be to meet them in fairness. The people in Thames, he was glad to note, had. great faith in theif town and district. Through that faith the battle was half won.
