RAILWAY REFRESHMENTS.
SET MEALS NOT PROFITABLE. In its annual report to Parliament the Railway Board stated that it had carefully investigated the refreshment service and had found that generally speaking the provision of set meals did not result in a remunerative return. The reduction from 2/6 to 2/ a meal inaugurated before the board took office had not been financially successful. It had resulted in a depletion of revenue, without additional service to the public. The former price had therefore" been reinstated. A number of the dining rooms were not satisfactory from a revenue point of view, but it was undesirable to close them owing to .a reasonable standard of service being required. Maungaturoto dining room had, however, been closed..
In respect to the counter rooms, the board concluded that the standard of service could not be maintained under present conditions at a lower range ■of prices than now operating.
