WHEAT DUTIES.
"English" makes a statement that ojl\ a bushel paid to the English farmer for his quota makes a difference of not more than a halfpenny per loaf, which is equal to £2 15/ per ton of flour. If the present price of Dread could be reduced by a similar amount, a halfpenny (which England gladly pays to benefit English farmers who enjoy the world's parity and whose income-tax returns prove their prosperity), then each family in New Zealand would save a weekly ®u,m of 2fd, it being reckoned that an average household-uses 2.83 four-pound loaves weekly. "English" says that Britain would rather import eggs and pulp from New Zealand than from China—l presume at the same price. The Chinese are a frugal and industrious race with a standard of living below ours and they grow the grain and poultry food in China. In our efforts to export millions more eggs than we are now exporting the wheat must be grown overseas and incur the charges of freight, insurance, receiving and delivering, invoicing, wharfage, cartage, railage 'and profit. The Chamber of Commerce circular to Parliament says New Zealand is wasting an opportunity in eggproduction for the sake of preserving a relatively small industry. This golden opportunity means importing all wheat supplies from overseas, some eight or nine million bushels. It is incredible that such a policy should ibe propounded by practical men. FAIR TRADE.
