Macfarlane appeared to improve, but occasionally had delusions. On Wednesday night Sister Begby, a neighbour, came to the house in order that Nurse Howard could have some rest. During the day Macfarlane had been talking queerly, but he slept soundly through the night. No knives or other sharp instruments were left in the room. At the time she was attacked, Miss Chappell was getting breakfast ready in the kitchenette. Macfarlane came in through the back door with a tomahawk, which he must have picked up at the back of the house. On Scaring Miss Chappell's calls, Nurse Howard rushed into the kitchenette and seized Macfarlane's wrists. The screams also brought Mr. 6. I. Beeson, who rushed into the house and took the tomahawk from Macfarlane. Mother a Maori. George Macfarlane is a half-caste, being the son of a man who came from Scotland in the early days and married a Maori woman of high rank at Kawhia. In his early days Macfarlane was a r.ative interpreter at Carterton, in the Wairarapa, Afterwards he was farming for a number of years. He also owned a good deal of farming property. For a long while he lived at Paterangi on a farm caled "Piko-piko," on land that belonged to his ancestors on his mother's side. Many of .his mother's pepole are buried on the place, and Macfarlane had a fine tombstone erected to their memory. He still owns land at Paterangi, and about six months ago he paid the place a visit. Macfarlane is a tall, well-built man, unusually active for his age, and people who know him speak of his gentlemanly manner. When he retired from farming, about eight years ago, he came to live at Mount Albert, and one of his chief occupations was the care of his garden. Lately he had suffered from rheumatic fever, and to look after him a nurse had been called in, and the services of another nurse, a neighbour, were also requisitioned. > Inquest Opened. vfv k"s ues '' was opened before Mr. A- Hunt, S.M., this afternoon, when George Albert Chappell, brother of deceased, said he had viewed the body of the deceased at the morgue at the Auckland Hospital.
