INFANT'S DEATH.
DOCTOR IN CUSTODY.
MURDER CHARGE PENDING. APPLICATION FOR BAIL. OPPOSITION BY POLICE. According to a statement made by Detective Sergeant Kelly in the Police Court this morning, George Frederick Hewer, aged 39, medical practitioner, who has been in custody since his arrest on October 3, on a charge of unlawful uee of an instrument upon a young woman, is to be further charged with the murder of the infant bora to the woman. Hewer was remanded until October 11. On Tuesday last, when Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., refused to grant bail, Iβ told counsel for accused to renew the application in three days' time.
This morning counsel made a farther application for bail.
Hewer was not present in Court.
Counsel eaid he had been speaking to the medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, -where the woman was a patient, and had been informed that she was progressing favourably! . "I must strenuously oppose the granting of ibail in this case," eaid Detective Sergeant Kelly. "An information ihas new been laid against accused for murder."
Counsel: Tlhafc is in connection with, the death of a child. Bail has- teen allowed before in such cases as these. In_ view of the circumstances I did not think the Court would refuse bail altogether.
Tihe magistrate said he would give the matter further consideration, i "Anyway," he said, "Hewer has not been charged with murder yet."
Detective Sergeant Kelly said Hewer would be charged when he next appeared on remand.
