At the Sydney wool sales to-day 12,284 bales were offered, and 11,715 were sold. Also 976 bales were sold privately.

The market continued very firm, Japanese Buyers competing freely for all fleece qualities. Yorkshire also gave support on suitable lines. Good clearances were effected. Greasy Merino sold to 15d. At the Melbourne sales 8500 bales were offered—a fairly good selection. Competition from Continental. Japanese and Bradford operators was keen and sustained, and values were on a par with those ruling at the opening last season. The toil price realised was 13% d. LONDON WOOL SALES. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 5. At the wool sales 8906 bales were offered, including 6768 New Zealand. About 6883 were sold. There was active and well-distributed competition, with few withdrawals. Crossbreds were firm, but greasy Merinos dropped 5 per cent, compared with opening rates. New Zealand crossbred, Fernside, top price 9%d, average 7%d; scoured, Glenlyon, 19% d and 17% d.

LONDON TALLOW MARKET. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 5. At the tallow sales 431 casks were offered, and 319 s,old at 6d advance. Quotations are: —Best beef, 25/9; medium, 22/; best mutton, 28/6; medium, 22/. The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office, under date sth instant: —Tallow: There is a fair demand. Current quotations: Good mutton, 25/6 per cwt; good beef, 23/9 to 24/ per cwt; good mixed, 23/9 per cwt. Gut: 18/ to 20/6 per cwt. AUSTRALIAN PRODUCE. SYDNEY, October 5.

Following are to-day's quotations on the Sydney produce market: —Silo wheat, local market, 3/3% a bushel. Inquiry practically at a standstill. Bagged, nominal, at about 3/6. Farmers are reported to be holding off. Country trade quiet. Shippers' limits for growers' lots unchanged at 2/6 for bulk, and 2/7 for bagged, equal to 3/2 on trucks, Sydney. Flour, £10 10/; bran and pollard. £5 10/; potatoes, Tasmanian, £5 10/.; Victorian, £4 5/; onions, American, £40; oaten hay, to £7 10/; maize, yellow, 5/4; white, 5/2.

Adelaide prices are:—Wheat, growers' lots, 3/1& to 3/2; flour, bakers' lots, £8 5/; bran, £5 5/; pollard, £5 15/; oats, 1/8 to 1/9. THE PRICE OF GOLD. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 5. Gold is quoted at £5 19/4 per ounce. DAIRY PRODUCE. MERCHANTS' CABLES.

New Zealand Loan ' and Mercantile Agency.—New Zealand butter, finest, 114/ per cwt; firsts, 108/. Market is slow. Cheese, white, 66/; coloured, 60/ to 61/. Steady.
