RIFLE SHOOTING.
AUCKLAND MATCHES. NEW RANGE AT WAITERIMU. It was Akarana's day out on Saturday at Penrose and some very fine shooting was seen iu both grades. At SOU yards A. Walker maue light work of his string of toil shots lor the following :—5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 0, 5—4 S. Conditions beat him at tuc longer range. Walter JL'owcil scored 4S at 500 and 'demonstrated his ability by making this Score at a timu when conditions were fur ti'oiu easy. E. Rfstoii, who is a flue rifleman, showed up well with 40 at 500 and 48 at 600. Keston bus had trouble with his ritle and his shooting last year was much- below his usual standard. One is glad to notice his Saturday's performance, which was splendid under the conditions which prevailed.
I). Culder only dropped one point at 500 and followed this with 5, 4, 5, 5, 3, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, —45 at 600 yards. Had Calder struck clearer light at t>oo his shoot would have been even better. As it is his »4 will start him well for his' club championship series.
City Club's shooting was not so good as usual. C. J. Hoblnson won top place with 1)1, made up as follows : —SOO yards, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 5, 4, 4, 4—45; and 000 yards, 0, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4,-40. Kobiesou won the B grade championship in his club last'season and has been promoted to A grade, where no doubt he will hold his place with credit.
In the A grade the rest of the competitors floundered, especially at the longer range. A. G. Robertson made 89, while G. G. Kelly, P. Bowes, H. J. Verrall and 11. W. Verrall were even with 88 each.
The City B grade marksmen were better. G. Beuth (a newcomer) shot very well for SI), while J. Walker compiled a useful S7. Walker is showing great improvement over his last season's shooting aud may very well carry-off the B grade honours this year. T. P. O'Flaherty in his first club shoot .also scored 87. There ore more B grade shots in the City Club this year than A graders, which is an encouraging augury. The City Club should have a strong team for the Labour Day Army Uifle Association, as they have always practised military shooting in conjunction with their ordinary "bullseye" work. The Wiiiterimu riflemen have established a new range with mounds at various distances from 200 yards to 700 yards. 11. Sinimonds, of the City Club, opened the new range on Saturday. There are 30 members in this club, which is known as the Waikare Club. Such a strong club in this district augurs well for rifle shooting in the Auckland Province.
