ATTACKED BY SHARK.

JAPANESE LOSES ABM. WARNING TO FIJI BATHERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, September 27. While a Japanese fisherman was catching turtle off Navua on the reef he speared a large fish and jumped into the water, where the fish was diving in a deep pool. As he did so a big shark dashed at him and mauled his left arm. His companion managed to drag him into the punt, and rowed with him to Doumba town, where a native tied a ligature to stop the bleeding. He was then taken to Navua, where an Indian medial practitioner found it necessary to amputate the limb. The victim is iu a low state. Once again the local theory that swimmers in Fiji waters are immune from attacks by sharks has been rudely shattered. The perfect contempt all races in Fiji seem to show for the shark has long been remarkable. Children swim at the island holiday resort of Nukulau while sharks 16ft long can be seen swimming within 20ft of them. Recently Mr. W. Nicholson landed a shark about lCft long at Nukulau, while many whites were in the water. While the motor ship Northmoor was at Lambasa the crew landed a shovel-nose shark measuring 11A ft, and inside found the shell of a turtle. The shark landed by Mr. Nicholson also had swallowed a turtle.
