THIRTY YEARS A FORESTER.
CHIEF RANGER RETIRES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, this day. There was a large and representative gathering of forestry workers at a dinner in the Hotel on Saturday evening, the occasion being a presentation and farewell to Mr. R. Macßae, senior State forest?ranger, who has completed 30 years' service. The Chief Inspector of Forests, Mr. C. M. Smith, presided, and also present were Dr. Cunningham, Mr. R. H. Murray, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Messrs. Owen Jones and H. Johnson, administrator and manager of Perpetual Forests, Ltd. From the early days of prison labour down to the present time Mr. Macßae has supervised the planting of the State forests, 200,000 acres in all, and he has been popular with all ranks. As an acknowledgment of his services he has been elected an honorary member of the Institute of Forestry. There are only three other such, membets—Sir Francis Bell, Dr. Cockayne, and Professor Kirk. Mr. Macßae, who contemplates a visit to Scotland, was presented with a travelling bag from the European workers and with a piu piu from the Maoris. ,
