ABLE MINISTER.
HON. B. MASTERS DEFENDED. PRIME MINISTER'S TRIBUTE. (Br Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The holding of a portfolio by a member of the Legislative Council was stoutly defended by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in the House yesterday when replying to statements by Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Coalition Reform, Riccarton). "We have already had a vote on this question," said Mr. Forbes, who went on to say that because a man of outstanding ability might be a. member of the Upper Chamber it was no reason why the country should be deprived of his services and ability. In hir> opinion, the present Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C., was one of the ablest meu in public life to-day, but the fact that he had a seat in theLegislative Council was no reason why the country could not have the benefit of his services, which were greatly appreciated by those who were following his work.
