FUTURE UNCERTAIN.
PROBLEM OF HIKURANGI MINES. POSSIBLE FLOODING OF BOTH. The decision of the Unemployment Board, against giving any financial assistance towards providing the pumping machinery to control the inflow of water at the Waro mine has endangered the future of that mine and the Hikurangi mine adjoining it. The owners of the Waro mine, Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement, Limited, state that they do not intend to resume mining, and the flooding of the mine may also extend to the Hikurangi mine. The owners of the latter mine have been offered the use of the pumping plant at the Waro so that the water can be controlled there, but they consider the estimated cost, £250, prohibitive. To what extent the flooding of the Waro mine will affect Hikurangi will -not be known for about six weeks. The directors of the company are uncertain as to the possibilities of carrying on —a very vital matter for the township—and further representation will probably be I made- to the Government for assistance.
