AN ANCIENT CANAL.
Within the borders of the present Soviet Union there exists an irrigation canal which has been in use nearly 3000 years. According to a marker whose inscription has been deciphered, the canal was constructed about the year 900 B.C. It diverts water from the Arax River, in Armenia. The marker, or stele, after relating the construction, invokes a curse on any who destroy either the marker or the canal. Whether or not the curse lent protection, tlie canal is still in operation.
