The cowardice of sharks is well known among men who have been much at sea in southern waters. The fiercest shark will, as a rule, get out of the way of a swimmer if he causes a noisy eplashing. In the South Sea Islands natives never bathe alone, but always in parties of half a dozen or eo, in order that they may make a great hubbub in the water and thus frighten the sharks.
