Food played a prominent part in primitive marriages as an offering to the gods who were specially concerned, with marriage. Some primitive forms of marriage consist of the bride and bridegroom feeding each other with rice or clam broth. The wedding guests received what was over. The wedding cake is a eurvival of thiß ancient custom.
