CHILD DELINQUENCY.
DISQUIETING INCREASE. ATTRIBUTED TO DISTRESS. An increase of nearly 25 per cent in the number of cases before the Children's Court in Auckland is mentioned, in the child welfare report for the halfyear ending yesterday. The<.reason given for the increase is distress and unemployment. I The magistrate irt charge of the CWI- - Court, Mr. E. C. Cutten, states, in the course of a review, that there was an increase of 18 per cent in theft charges, 100 per cent in casee of mischief, and a marked, increase, amounting to 43 per cent, from those classified as unemployed. In the struggle to make enda meet it was almost to be expected that the same care could not be exercised in the control of children, but committals to the care of the superintendent were fewer than in the same period last year. Only in ten cases had an offender come back to the Court. Acknowledgment is made of excellent assistance from the Big Brother Movement under Mr. Adair, of the Y.M.C.A., and Father O'Neill, and from the Salvation Army.
Concluding, Mr. Cutten states that the period hae been a difficult time for many parents, and a disheartening one for many children. The return eliowed a reduction in the number of cases in which the Court had to take serious measures.
