TE AWAMUTU TRIALS.

LUCIDUS GOES FAST. PELAGIA ALSO IMPRESSES. The course proper, next to the rails, was open at Te Awamutu on Thursday morning for Avondale candidates and two-year-olds, all others being on the extreme outeide of this track. The going was in excellent order, and some fast times were recorded. On the Rails.

The first to work 911 this track was Pelagia, who was striding along nicely over half a mile to occupy 49 3-ss. This was a very pleasing effort, and she did it well. Trishna had a slight advantage over Eager Rose at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.19, and could have improved upon this time. Both these horses will be in fine fettle to fulfil their Avondale engagements, although Eager Rose in:iy be a little on the big side, and may need a race. A nice gallop was recorded by Kanapa, who strode over seven furlongs in 1.31. He was under restraint over the first couple of furlongs. Dinelli was not doing her best ovli.- three furlongs to take 41e. This filly has shown no ill effects as the result of her recent racing, and continues to work in a .pleasing manner. Nothing on the track at present is working better than Champion Hack Plate candidate Lucidus, ' who carries a very bright appearance. He was not ridden out to take 48 4-5s for half a mile. His Avondale prospects look very bright. Sea Ruler accompanied Impasto over a halfmile, and they were on terms after taking Impasto is steadily on the improve. Chateau was doing better than hie companion, Soloist, at the conclusion of half a mile in 51s. The Avondale Cup candidate Limeen was assisted over eeven furlongs by her stable companion, Rose Lupin. Both were doing-it easily to_ take 1.33. At no time in her career has Limeen been working better than she is doing at present, and she has only to continue on the right way to be a good proposition. Protomint was allotted seven furlongs, but at no time was he above threequarter, pace. Loombination had the advantage of Jonathan at the conclusion of eeven furlongs, which occupied 1.31 2-5. Loombination is another that is steadily improving. Foreign Money and Miss Lorraine were on terms at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.3. The King Lu— All Win gelding, Trickling Waters, and the General Latour—March gelding were companions over two furiongs. All three were hitting out nicely to take 29%5. The Gay Shield—Persia colt who recently joined A. Cook's string went nicely over two furlongs in 275. This colt has a nice appearance, and poseesses pace. Master Rex, the Chief Ruler—Mise Sphinx filly and the Musketoon—Archquil filly were given a sprint over two furlongs, taking On the Outside. Transaction was allotted five furlongs on the outside of the course proper, but was not being bustled to take 1.13. King's Knave placed three furlonge behind in 465. He could have done better. Safe Bank was being kept up to his work when, in company with Erination, he covered six furlongs in 1.26. On the Plough. Among those doing pace work on this track: were Marechal, Sir Musk, Arawa Rose, Bambury, and Gaysogne

OPOTIKi CLUB.

TO RACE THIS SEASON. <By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, Friday. At a meeting of the Opotiki Jockey Club last night it was definitely decided tohold the annual race meeting this season, the date being January 27. The stake money will total 350sovs, exclusive of the value of the trophy that will go to the winner of the cup. Owing to the ' meagre nominations the meeting was abandoned last season.

AN IMPROVED GALLOPER.

Last season Baroscope contested nineteen races and was only once successful, winning the St. Andrew's Handicap, nine furlongs, at the Takapuna spring meeting. He was added to the list during the off season and the operation has evidently proved beneficial, for in his only start this season he beat a useful field in the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting. Baroscope is engaged in the principal events at the Avondafe meeting next month, and he is likely to show up prominently in any race' he] contests at the suburban meeting. I
