"FIERY CROSS" MOVEMENT.
AI/L NIGHT INTERCESSION. CHUKCH'S CALL TO PRAYER. Following the netting up of a fiery cross continuous intercession for 24 hours will be begun at St. Thomas' Church, Freeman's Bay, this evening. The main object of the fiery cross movement may be briefly expressed as "a clay of prayer in every parish every year." The movement originated in the zeal fostered for evangelistic work at the Anglo-Catholic Congress in 1923. To-day, the eve of Holy Cross Day, has been chosen for the first setting up of the cross in New Zealand. The New Zealand Church Fellowship is responsible for the sending forth of the fiery cross, and the various parishes in which the cross will be set up are to organise their own station days. Those participating in the celebrations are asked to make some form of self-denial. Having as its symbol a black cross, with silver lettering, with a representation of the Sacred Heart at the base, and the representation of flames enveloping the cross, the movement was given the title of the fiery cross because the name suggested a call spread from one end of the land to tlw; other in the same way in which the fiery cross was the call to arras of the Scots clansmen when their enemies threatened. At St. Thomas' Church this evening the crose will be received at the west door at evensong at 7.30, and will be placed on the altar during tiie 24 hours' intercession. The Rev. A. Russell Allerton will officiate at evensong, and during the intercession will be assisted by several other members of the clergy. Throughout the night a vigil of prayer for the conversion of New Zealand will be maintained.
